Garrett Motion

For more than 65 years, Garrett Motion has specialised in the development of turbochargers and boosting systems. Its engineering solutions are an integral part of the world's most prestigious championships, from the 24 Hours of Le Mans and Pikes Peak to the elite category of Formula 1. The Garrett brand is seen not merely as a component manufacturer, but above all as a technological innovator. By using advanced computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and testing under extreme conditions, the company achieves maximum efficiency that translates directly into performance and reliability in both road and racing applications.

Garrett turbocharger segmentation

The turbocharger range is strategically divided to suit the specific needs of different levels of modification:

1. G-Series

The G-Series represents the current pinnacle of Garrett engineering. It is the most advanced generation of turbochargers, designed from the ground up for maximum efficiency.

  • Technology: Uses the latest aerodynamics of compressor and turbine wheels made from high-temperature alloys (Mar-M).
  • Characteristics: Offers an unrivalled size-to-performance ratio. The turbos are smaller and lighter than their predecessors, yet they can generate higher airflow and have extremely fast spool-up.
  • Application: Professional motorsport and top-level tuning projects.

2. G-Series Gen II

Generation II of the G-Series builds on the success of the first line and pushes the limits of efficiency even further.

  • Technology: Brings further optimisation of the compressor wheel geometry, raising the power ceiling while keeping the same dimensions of the turbocharger body.
  • Characteristics: Focuses on an even wider compressor map, which means more stable performance across a broader rev range and higher resistance to surge.
  • Application: The most demanding applications, where every kilowatt and every millisecond of response counts.

3. G-Xrace

The G-Xrace is a special branch derived from the G-Series, intended primarily for specific racing categories with strict regulations (e.g. limited inducer diameters).

  • Technology: Optimised for maximum airflow within the specific dimensional limits defined by the rules of the FIA or other sporting bodies.
  • Characteristics: Maximum spool aggressiveness and optimisation for racing fuels and high combustion temperatures.
  • Application: Pure-bred circuit motorsport, drag racing and rally.

4. GT Series

The legendary GT product line, which brought ball-bearing technology into the mainstream.

  • Technology: Uses traditional cast compressor wheels and the reliable Garrett Dual Ball Bearing system.
  • Characteristics: Although technologically older than the G-Series, it still represents the benchmark for reliability. It offers a linear power build-up and is known for its long service life.
  • Application: Street tuning, older racing projects and conversions from naturally aspirated to turbocharged engines.

5. GTX Gen II

Before the arrival of the G-Series, the GTX series was the brand's flagship, and to this day it remains among the best-selling products at Race-shop.

  • Technology: The main difference from the GT series is the use of forged, fully machined (billet) compressor wheels with improved aerodynamics.
  • Characteristics: Allows operation at much higher boost pressures and offers 10–20% more power than the standard GT series with the same turbine size.
  • Application: Drift, drag racing and high-performance "street" cars.

6. PowerMax™

Powermax is a category aimed at customers looking for a power increase without the need for radical modifications to the engine bay.

  • Technology: These are complete turbochargers designed as a direct replacement for the original parts (bolt-on). They use OEM housings but are fitted with Garrett's internal technology (often from the GTX range).
  • Characteristics: They retain the original mounting points as well as the oil and water lines, while significantly raising the vehicle's maximum power limit.
  • Application: Modern platforms such as the VW Golf GTI/R (EA888), Ford Ecoboost 3.5L and similar.

Control valves (Garrett Vent Series)

Precise control of boost pressure is key to protecting the engine and shaping the power delivery.

  • External wastegates (GVW): Valves designed to regulate turbine speed by diverting excess exhaust gases. Available in 40mm, 45mm, 50mm and 60mm sizes. They feature high thermal resistance and interchangeable springs for precise setting of the required pressure.
  • Blow-off valves (GVB): Valves that release excess pressure from the intake tract when the throttle closes. They protect the compressor wheel from surge and extend the service life of the turbocharger.

Charge air cooling (Intercoolers)

Garrett is among the leading suppliers and manufacturers of intercoolers, which excel in performance, durability and minimal pressure drop.

  • Intercooler cores: Stand-alone cores in various sizes for custom intercooler builds. The range includes air-to-air cores rated from 300 to 1275 hp and air-to-liquid cores rated from 500 to 1000 hp.
  • Complete intercooler kits: Kits designed for specific vehicle models, optimising thermal efficiency within the limited space of the engine bay.

Spare parts and service components

For maintenance and repairs, Garrett provides full support in the form of genuine parts.

  • CHRA (Central Housing Rotating Assembly): Fully assembled and balanced centre sections. Replacing the CHRA is the most efficient way to rebuild a turbocharger while retaining factory specifications.
  • Turbine housings: Separate exhaust-side housings with different flange types (T25, T4, V-Band) and different A/R values, allowing the turbo's characteristics to be changed.
  • Gasket sets and installation kits: Specific sets containing all the gaskets needed for the oil feed and drain, coolant lines and exhaust flanges.
  • Wastegate actuators: Vacuum or pressure-operated actuators for turbochargers with internal wastegate control.
  • Turbo speed sensors: Devices that allow the actual shaft speed to be monitored. This data is critical for mapping the turbocharger's limits and preventing overspeed.
  • Restrictors and fittings: Specific components for the correct connection of oil and water lines, ensuring optimal lubrication and cooling of the bearings.
