Automotive lighting has come a long way since the days of kerosene lamps. Today, drivers have plenty of options to choose from when it comes to upgrading the lighting system of their vehicle. Three popular options are halogen, xenon and LED bulbs. In this article, we'll explore the features and benefits of each type of bulb to help you make the right choice.

Halogen bulbs
Halogen bulbs have been a default choice of automotive lighting departments for many years. They work on a simple principle - the tungsten filament inside the bulb heats up when an electric current passes through it, creating light. This is the most common type of lighting, especially for low-beam and high-beam headlights. Halogen bulbs have:
- the best cost-efficiency when choosing bulbs
- broad availability and easy replaceability
- lower luminous intensity and lifetime compared to LED or Xenon bulbs
- lower energy efficiency and high heat output (causing damage to the lens and other light components)
Xenon discharge bulbs
Xenon bulbs, also known as HID lamps, have gained popularity for their intense and bright light output. These bulbs work differently than halogen bulbs because they use an electric arc to produce light. Often used in modern vehicles, they are known for their bluish light beam. Xenon lamps are:
- significantly brighter than halogen lamps
- durable and long-lasting vehicle lighting solution
- more energy efficient than halogen, producing less heat and saving energy
- available in different light temperatures (light colour)
- suitable as a dipped beam or high-beam, or a combination of the two (bi-xenon lighting)
- more costly and difficult to install compared to halogen lamps
LED bulbs
They have become increasingly popular in recent years due to their energy efficiency and versatility. A modern solution for vehicle lighting in every direction, whether it be daytime running lights (DRL), low beam headlights, interior or other exterior lighting. LED bulbs:
- offer excellent brightness that is comparable to xenon lamps. They also provide a pure white light that improves visibility
- have the longest lifetime of the three options mentioned, with many models lasting tens of thousands of hours
- are highly energy efficient and consume significantly less energy than halogen or xenon bulbs
- can be more expensive, but their long life and energy efficiency can lead to cost savings over time
- are an easy replacement for LED interior lighting and other vehicle lighting
- most quality LED bulbs include CAN-BUS, which avoids replacement problems on more modern vehicles
- when replacing halogen bulbs with LEDs, installation problems can arise due to the built-in heat sink or converter and therefore larger dimensions
