Electric Water Pump

The purpose of the water pump is to circulate the coolant (a mixture of water and antifreeze) in the vehicle's cooling system in a sufficient volume and speed so that the engine temperature is optimally regulated. A conventional water pump is usually driven by a belt connected to the engine crankshaft or timing belt. While the engine is running, the water pump continuously circulates the coolant through the channels in the engine block and cylinder head and absorbs the heat generated by the combustion process. The correct functionality of the water pump prevents overheating of the engine and keeps it at an optimal temperature for its functionality.

However, in addition to cooling, the pump also creates a high load for the engine itself due to the flow resistance of the coolant and possible additional parts such as a fan (which can be connected directly to the water pump, e.g. via a viscous fan clutch). Among other things, modifying the vehicle and increasing the performance may mean that the stock water pump cannot cool the engine even in combination with a larger radiator or a more powerful fan

The ideal solution to ensure maximum cooling is the installation of an electric water pump instead of a serial one (mechanically controlled) or as a powerful addition to an existing cooling system. It is an electrically powered water pump independent of the speed and functionality of the engine with the option of selecting the liquid flow rate per hour. Our offer includes pumps with flow rates from 23 L/h to 150 L/h.

What is an electric water pump and what is it for?

Electri water pump is a product dependent on a 12 or 24v power supply, which rotates the integrated vanes and thus pushes water through the cooling system, either for cooling the engine, intercooler (in the case of a water-cooled IC) or circulating the heating water in the case of the webasto system (independent heating). These pumps can also be found in newer serial vehicles already in the basic equipment. They achieve better cooling performance and can work independently of engine speed or functionality.

The Davies Craig pump can be controlled automatically by the controller or manually by a button. The DC controller has the advantage that it changes the voltage and thus also changes the speed of the pump up or down in search of the target temperature (which can be set arbitrarily). When the engine reaches the selected temperature, the controller stops, constantly changing the speed of the pump to maintain the correct temperature regardless of engine speed and vehicle speed. The pump can also stop completely so that the motor reaches the optimal temperature as quickly as possible, after which the connected fan/fans an be controlled via the control panel if the temperature rises by +3 degrees above the set value. Subsequently, the pump can operate for up to 3 minutes after turning off the ignition or when it cools down by 10°C. All these benefits are provided by the water pump installed in cooperation with the control panel.

By removing the original water pump and the fan located on it, the vehicle can regain up to 30 horsepower and reduce consumption by 3 to 10%. The overall stress on the parts will also be reduced and the entire transmission of the drive through the crankshaft will be simplified. Research has shown that an electric water pump uses 90% less energy than conventional systems, i.e. mechanical pump. Other benefits include lower emissions due to faster engine warm-up, better engine temperature management, elimination of engine overheating and better engine life.

The advantage is also the low weight (from 900g-1.5kg) compared to mechanical pumps, which can weigh up to 5kg. This fact will be especially appreciated by motorsport enthusiasts who expect maximum performance and the lowest weight to achieve the best possible results. The universality and flexibility of the connection is also a huge advantage, thanks to which the water pump can be installed anywhere on the vehicle.

How to connect the water pump to the system?

Nowadays, electric water pumps našli hlavne drifteri. are mainly popular among drifters. In vehicles modified for drift, we usually find that the water cooler is located in the rear part of the vehicle for ideal weight distribution and the fact that the front part of the vehicle, where the water cooler is usually installed, does not have a direct air supply. The original water pump would not be sufficient for such a change in the cooling system, therefore the installation of an additional water pump or the installation of a powerful electric pump is required, which does not have the slightest problem supplying the radiator located in the trunk of the vehicle with coolant and thus cooling the stressed engine on the opposite side.

The water pump can be placed anywhere, either in the exterior or interior of the vehicle, directly next to the engine, next to the radiator or on the opposite side of the vehicle. However, it is important to install the pump vertically to avoid excessive strain on the motor bearing. Davies Craig offers dedicated brackets with which the pump can be easily installed. The electrical supply is realized using 12 or 24v with or without a control panel using a button on the dashboard. The cooling system has several connection options. You can use AN16 fittings or direct connection using a silicone hose with an inner diameter of 38 mm.

The pump can work as an auxiliary in combination with a series pump or as a more powerful direct replacement that is not bound by engine speed or whether the engine is started. During installation, it is necessary to remove the stock thermostat, which could act restrictively in the cooling system, and when removing the stock water pump, a shortened belt is also required.
